Application

Thank you very much for your interest in the Chemistry Master Program at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

All applicants with a German (Bachelor) degree from an University or an University of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschule) apply directly and electronically to the admission committee for the master program in Chemistry (you find more information here Bewerbung auf einen Masterstudienplatz Chemie):

All applicants with a foreign (Bachelor) degree apply through the portal of uni-assist: http://www.uni-assist.de/
These applications are collected through uni-assist, are verified for formal accuracy, and finally passed on to the admission committee for the Chemistry Master program for final verification. uni-assist is an association founded by the German universities, which takes care of the technical processing of applications.

Application Deadlines

In order to process your application as early as possible, we strongly recommend that you submit all your documents already by January 5th / July 5th respectively.

  • for the summer term (Sommersemester): 15 January
  • for the winter term (Wintersemester): 15 July

Requested Documents for Application

The admission committee requires the certified copies of the following documents in order to be able to verify your application:

  • Letter of Motivation
  • School leaving certificate (or an equivalent degree of qualification for access to German universities)
  • Bachelor-degree (or an equivalent university degree). A German Bachelor degree can be handed in later.
  • Transcript of Records
  • Proof of English language skills*
  • Candidates have to prove at least 12 credit points in the following areas:
    a) Inorganic Chemistry
    b) Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry
    c) Physical and Theoretical Chemistry and in total at least 60 credit points.
  • internal application form (please fill in online, print and sign)

*Candidates have to prove adequate English language skills. Level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, (CEFR) or equivalent is considered as adequate. For candidates, who have gained their general university entrance qualification within the area of application of the German Basic Law, this requirement  is regarded as fulfilled. No language certificates are needed for candidates, who have successfully completed a Bachelor study program or equivalent in English. The examination board decides on granting exemptions.

Sequence of Application (for applicants with a foreign school and university degree)

The common sequence of an application is the following:

  • Register through the application portal: Cologne University's online application service

You will receive an e-mail with a security link.

  1. Activate your access by clicking on the secured link
  2. Sign on in the application portal (online application service)
  3. Enter your personal data (name, address, etc), your desired course in Chemistry and save.
  4. Create a PDF document of your application by using the link "Antrag drucken“.
  5. Send your application electronically to uni-assist using the link "Antrag übermitteln“.
  6. Transfer the administration fees to the account of uni-assisst (bank account details).
  7. Print and sign the PDF document.
  8. Send the printed and signed PDF document together with your documents and the transfer receipt to the address of uni-assist.


The following criteria are applied for the approval:

  1. If all Bachelor Modules have been successfully completed and the overall grade is 2.5 (or better) the candidate is admitted.
    If the grade is below the candidate will be refused.
    If only the grade of the Bachelor thesis is missing, the threshold grade is also 2.5.
  2. If the Bachelor thesis and one further modules are not yet completed, the following procedure is applied:
    a) Grade 2.3 or better: approval, b) Grade 2.3-2.6: interview, c) Grade below 2.6: refusal
  3. If the grade fits to the above mentioned criteria, but is not yet certain, whether the candidate achieved enough credit points in the mention areas, the candidate will be invited to an interview.
  4. If the Bachelor thesis and two (or more) modules have not yet completed, the candidate will be refused.

Decisions concerning admission for the Master program are send out at latest February, 28th and August 31th, respectively.

Handing in the Bachelor Degree Later / Admission with Qualified Acceptance

Handing in the Bachelor certificate later is in general possible for German Bachelor degrees within a time period given by the admission committee. The admission is then with qualified acceptance. In case the proof of the Bachelor degree is not given on time the admission to the master course will be retracted and the right to inscription ceases.
